What made you choose to become a hair transplant surgeon?
Much of medical and surgical training has become formulaic and there’s a paucity of opportunities to be truly creative and express artistic flair. Hair transplants allow me to showcase not just my technical skills but also to demonstrate individual
artistry designing patterns tailored to every individual’s facial features. Patients attend the clinic seeking a treatment of their own volition rather than the necessity of procedures provided on the NHS where feelings of relief may be the
Seeing the patients return with ineffable joy on their faces is very satisfying. I may not be saving lives like I was when I was working in a hospital setting but I am definitely helping patients regain and boost their confidence. This helps them attain a comfort in their appearance which affects their lives in a positive way. I find my work thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding at the same time.
How many years have you been working in hair restoration?
What qualities are required to be a good hair transplant surgeon?
Patience, artistry and creativity, good teamwork and leadership, sound medical knowledge, good communication skills.
How important is your team in your line of work?
Hair restoration is a team endeavour. All members of the team should share similar values in aiming to achieve greatness. Patients notice a palpable difference when meeting a team which is enthusiastic, friendly and empathetic.
A good leader who demonstrates the characteristics above will radiate these traits throughout the team.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about having a hair transplant?
Hair transplants are so common nowadays. No longer would one fear being ridiculed for undergoing hair restoration. Perceptions are no different to teeth whitening, wrinkle treatments, fillers etc. I would advise any patient considering hair transplantation to research the procedure and maybe speak to individuals who have undergone the procedure already. It is paramount that they meet and discuss any lingering doubts and concerns with the surgeon. I also recommend they visit the clinic and meet the staff if possible. This helps build good rapport prior to the procedure.
How can a hair transplant affect a person’s confidence?
Having good hair has always been synonymous with virility and vigour as well as being a sign of both feminine and masculine allure. Hair loss ages the individual and subsequently, in the majority of cases, affects self-esteem and leads to loss of confidence. It draws the attention of one’s audience away from where it should focus (the eyes) and towards the hair loss.
